FAQs about Waste Management and Collection

Please read the following Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Waste Management Services. If there are any questions that are unanswered or you would like information or advice on any of our services, call us on 020 8692 0011, we will do our best to help.

FAQ 1: What is a Cage Lorry?

A cage lorry is a seven and a half tonne vehicle with an enclosed cage attached. The cage has a cubic capacity of approximately 9 cubic metres. This type of waste collection vehicle is ideal for house or office clearance or in a 'wait and load' situation. In the city and on busy roads, conjestion problems are making it more difficult to have a skip positioned on the highway for any length of time. A cage lorry overcomes this problem as collections are carried out quickly with minimal disruption. Allen Waste can arrange for the lorry to arrive at a time to suit you and you have a driver who can help you load.

FAQ 2: What can be disposed of in a Skip or Waste Container?

Almost anything that you consider to be waste or unwanted items can go into a skip or waste container. Skips (up to 8 cubic yard) and open containers can be used for heavy waste, including rubble/soil. When you contact Allen Waste for a quote regarding your waste disposal needs, our experienced staff are able to advise you if the items or material(s) you want to dispose of, can be disposed of (or recycled) by us. We will also advise what size of Waste Container will be suitable.

See 'Skip Hire Sizes' and 'Rollonoff Container and Compactor Sizes'.

FAQ 3: What waste can I put into a Waste Compactor?

All compactors, Portable and Static, are versatile and will compact mixed waste or segregated recyclable materials. The enclosed containers have many benifits, including improved hygiene in the case of food waste. (They are NOT suitable for rubble/soil.)

See Compactors & Balers and 'Benefits of Compaction'.

FAQ 4: How much time do I have to make use of the Rollonoff vehicle?

There is no time limit as such, Allen Waste will give you a quote for the supply of the container, the haulage (by Rollonoff vehicle) and the disposal of the contents. If the container is to be kept for over a week, we would advise you if there are additional costs.

FAQ 5: What size is a Rollonoff vehicle?

Rollonoffs can vary in size from a 20 yard (15.3 cubic metres), to a 30 yard Rollonoff (23.1 cubic metres), right up to a 40 yard Rollonoff with 30.6 cubic metre capacity.

FAQ 6: What are the regulations regarding Waste Disposal?

Allen Waste Management (London) Limited are a fully licensed waste carrier and can provide full Duty of Care documentation. Our trained staff are also abl to advise you regarding your responsibilities and the legal requirements. We are also able to advise you about what can be recycled and how best to prepare waste material for recycling.

FAQ 7: What can I do to prepare waste for Recycling?

Allen Waste have waste handling equipment for hire to make collecting and processing recyclable waste (and other waste materials) more efficient. We have Portable Compactors, Static Compactors, Skip Compactors and Balers which can be sited on your premises. They save on the space you need to store waste and reduce the number of collections required. Our staff can advise you on whether it would be cost effective for you to hire our compactors.

See Recycling and 'What waste should be recyled' for more information about waste recycling.

If you are still not sure what you can do to best prepare your waste for recycling prior to collection, call us on 020 8692 0011 and we will advise you on the best way to separate your waste for recycling.

FAQ 8: Is the waste collected by Allen Waste taken for Recycling?

Allen Waste is a part of a group of companies who own and operate two waste transfer stations and recycling centres in South East London. All of the waste collected by Allen Waste is taken here for sorting. Waste materials are sorted, by hand and mechanically, into recycling streams for onward shipping to reprocessors. The recyclable waste from these transfer stations is sent to UK based reprocessors for final processing. (We never directly send waste abroad.)

FAQ 9: If I want to order a service, how much notice do you need?

Contact Allen Waste at least 24 hours before you need the waste disposal service. This is usually enough time for us to make arrangements, unless there are special circumstances.

FAQ 10: How can I pay Allen Waste for their waste disposal services?

An account can be opened if you would like to use our waste disposal services on a regular basis. If it is a one off service or infrequent service you require, then you can pay by credit or debit card.

FAQ 11: Apart from collecting waste, do you provide any other services?
